BMW is going to resurrect the 6 Series, but will abandon the XM

The Bavarians are going to optimize the model range, writes Automotive News, citing anonymous sources. It is claimed that they want to return the 6-Series to it: the coupe and convertible will appear in the second half of 2026 and will replace the “eight”, the production of which will end by some time. In addition, the company will get rid of the controversial gasoline-electric crossover XM in four years, which did not live up to expectations.

BMW will build the 6 Series coupe and convertible on the CLAR modular platform. It allows the installation of both gasoline and hybrid and fully electric power plants. This architecture underlies all the new generation “fives”, including the new M5.

However, so far everything is ambiguous. BMWBlog sources deny information about the return of the 6-Series in 2026: according to them, the company has no plans to return the “six”. BMW representatives say the same thing.

The XM hybrid supercrossover debuted less than two years ago, but it is claimed that it will be removed from the lineup at the end of the first generation’s life cycle. This should happen at the end of 2028.

Previously, BMW planned to introduce an all-electric version of the XM, but this idea was abandoned due to the cold reception that the crossover received in the market: controversial design and, combined with high cost, resulted in modest sales figures.

BMW is working on “clean” electric vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform. It has been officially confirmed that the new line will include a “hot” electric car from BMW M without a fuel equivalent. The car with a four-engine power plant “will surpass everything you have ever seen,” the Bavarians promise.
