Bugatti is preparing a grand tourer with a naturally aspirated V16 at the front

The brand’s chief designer Frank Hale confirmed to the British magazine Autocar that the monstrous engine can be moved around in the monocoque to create different silhouettes. A Bugatti representative recalled the iconic Type 57 SC Atlantic model of the mid-1930s and said: the modern incarnation of the grand tourer may appear later. Bugatti’s goal is to return to its roots, producing a few unique cars.

Frank Heil suggested that Bugatti’s custom-order division could move to producing separate model lines and exclusive one-off cars. The chief designer recalled that the coachbuilding division has already produced the Bolide, Centodieci and La Voiture Noire.

However, previously Bugatti left the original mid-engine concept unchanged, and the new monocoque of the Tourbillon hypercar allows the engine to be placed both in front of the cockpit and behind the seats. Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac was not so frank, but made it clear: the long-term future of the brand is connected with internal combustion engines. In addition, Rimac recalled that Bugatti did not always produce only sports cars.

The head of the brand explained that releasing a hypercar was the first task, and other models may appear later. The dates have not yet been announced, even approximately: the first step in the new era should be mass production of the Tourbillon model in 2026, and we can think about expanding the range only after that.
