BYD wants to collect 700 thousand dollars from a blogger, and here’s why

At the end of November, Yao Muqiang tested the Leopard 5 SUV of the subsidiary sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao and said that the average fuel consumption was much higher than stated: 18 liters per 100 kilometers instead of the announced 1.81-7.8 liters per 100 kilometers. BYD did not agree with the blogger, accused him of dangerous driving, demanded an apology and compensation of five million yuan ($703 thousand).

BYD lawyers prepared for litigation: according to the automaker, during the FCB Leopard 5 test, it moved in a ragged rhythm and seriously exceeded the speed limit. Three times the SUV accelerated over 180 km/h, six times faster than 170 km/h, and 83% of the distance the speed was between 120 and 160 km/h. The video recording of Yao Muqiang’s arrival was handed over to the police.

The Leopard 8 frame SUV from BYD impressed with its power and weight. Chinese BYD showed the interior of a business sedan with a power reserve of 2000 km. Chinese electric car BYD repeated an old Audi advertising trick.

ВYD believes that the information about fuel consumption of 18 liters per 100 kilometers is false and damages the reputation of the Fang Cheng Bao brand. The blogger is required to make a public apology and damages in the amount of five million yuan ($703,000). The amount is unprecedented, because the test SUV cost about 320 thousand yuan (45 thousand dollars).

Blogger Yao Muqiang’s position on BYD’s lawsuit is not disclosed. After the release of the review, a real discussion took place on Chinese social networks about the fuel consumption of chargeable hybrids. However, the presentation of the material by the observer raises questions: Yao Muqiang initially stated that consumption of 18 liters per 100 kilometers was achieved “in normal driving manner.”
