Electrogenic has begun offering an electric vehicle conversion kit for the DeLorean DMC-12. It replaces the standard V6 with an all-electric powertrain.

The kit includes a 43 kWh battery located in place of the fuel tank, as well as an electric motor with 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 310 Nm of torque driving the rear wheels. This is a huge jump from the production car’s original 130 horsepower (97 kW) and 207 Nm.

The electric powertrain reduces the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time from 10 seconds to just under 5 seconds. Interestingly, the electric motor is compatible with both the DeLorean’s manual and automatic transmissions. Steve Drummond, CEO of Electrogenic, believes that the DeLorean is an obvious choice for an electric mod, since the DMC-12 has always been criticized for its underpowered engine.

“Since Electrogenic’s founding in 2018, we have seen great interest around the world in turning the DeLorean into an electric vehicle,” Drummond said.

The kit improves driving performance without taking away any of the original car’s remarkable features, while adding just 40kg of extra weight. The power reserve will be about 240 kilometers.

“When John DeLorean decided to make the DMC-12 more than forty years ago, he was determined to create a sports car that would be reliable and stand the test of time. So the conversion to an electric vehicle makes sense and feels true to the spirit of the original design,” Drummond said.

Remarkably, the conversion to an electric car is completely reversible. Installation of the kit does not require cutting, welding or modification of the chassis. The cost of the electric mod will be from 65,000 to 85,000 pounds sterling (from 7 to 9.2 million rubles), depending on the condition of the donor car.
