The share of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles imported through alternative channels in May fell from 11 to 8.5 percent. This is reported by TASS with reference to a study by Otkritie Bank and the Automarketer company. Approximately the same share of parallel-imported cars was recorded in the Russian car market in November last year – 8.4 percent.

In total, in May, 134.7 thousand new cars and light commercial vehicles imported “gray” were registered in Russia, analysts calculated. Here the drop by April turned out to be even more noticeable – 31 percent.

The first place among parallel imported cars was taken by the Chinese Geely, which is also present on the Russian market. It accounted for 13 percent of all “unofficial” cars registered. Li Xiang, or Li Auto, was second with a nine percent share, and Toyota third with eight percent.

In general, the share of Chinese brands among those imported to Russia simultaneously increased by four percent and reached 40 percent. Japanese brands are in second place: despite Japanese bans, their share of the “gray” market is 20 percent. Third place is occupied by the “Germans” with 17 percent.

Spending by Russians on the purchase of new cars is also declining, and for several months now. In May, 366.1 billion rubles were spent on them – 15.1 percent less than in April. Moreover, compared to the “low base” of May 2023, the amount increased by 73.5 percent.
