Automotive giant Ford is preparing to introduce a crossover with the functionality of British Land Rover SUVs. The American manufacturer has already patented one very interesting detail.

Land Rover Range Rover trunk

A recent patent application has revealed the development of a split tailgate for one of the American brand’s future crossovers. It is worth noting that this development was made three years ago. However, only now the technology has been patented and images have appeared on the Internet. Many experts immediately noticed the similarity of this trunk opening system with the one used in some Land Rover models.

Unlike a conventional one-piece tailgate, a split tailgate makes loading things into the trunk easier. The top section acts like the tailgate of a standard SUV, while the bottom section folds down to create a flat surface reminiscent of a pickup bed (photo: Land Rover; uspto.gov).

By the way, Ford recently initiated a large-scale recall campaign. Twelve thousand vehicles have problems (photo: Ford; uspto.gov).
