In the early 1970s, Ford Motor Company launched the compact and affordable Maverick. However, demand for it was not as high as the company expected, and over time, a surplus of unsold cars accumulated. Ford decided to store thousands of unsold Mavericks in the caves of SubTropolis, located in Kansas City, Missouri.
SubTropolis is a man-made underground complex of limestone mines covering over 500 hectares and used by many companies for storage of products.
Ford leased about 10 hectares of the cave complex. It was an ideal place to store the cars, as the caves have natural air conditioning and the temperature is constant throughout the year. The cars were stored in the caves for several years until they could all be sold.
Today, the SubTropolis complex is still in use.
