The brand’s subsidiary confirmed that versions with a more powerful naturally aspirated engine are no longer available in Europe. From now on, the Mazda MX-5 is sold only with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine (132 hp, 152 Nm) and a 6-speed manual, with the only exception being the UK. The reason for the reduction in the range is the tightening of emission standards. Mazda MX-5 prices range from 33 to 43.5 thousand euros.

Some dealers still have 2.0-liter Mazda MX-5s, but new deliveries are unlikely. The sports car’s life cycle is coming to an end, so an upgrade of the “older” engine to meet fuel economy standards is unlikely. This year, the roadsters will get a 35th Anniversary version, but it may not be offered in Europe.

Last fall, Mazda locally modernized the MX-5, and then the engineers only modified the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine. Such cars are not threatened by the tightening of environmental standards. Competitors in the segment have decreased, because the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ failed cybersecurity tests and were removed from the European range.

Outside Europe, the sports car will remain with a 2.0-liter engine, and in many countries this unit is the only one available. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual and an automatic with the same number of gears.
