North American Car of the Year Finalists Announced

Nine models were shortlisted for the NACTOY (The North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year) awards—three in each of the three categories: passenger car, crossover/SUV, and pickup truck. Among them there are both models with internal combustion engines, as well as electrified ones – hybrids and electric cars. The winners will be selected by an expert jury of 50 automotive journalists and experts. The awards ceremony will take place on January 4, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan.

The Toyota Prius/Prius Prime, Honda Accord and Ioniq 6 will compete for the title of best passenger car in North America. In the pickup truck category, two Chevrolet models will compete for the victory – the Colorado and Silverado EV, as well as the Ford F-Series Super Duty. Finally, the “best utility vehicle” (a combined category for crossovers and SUVs) could be the Genesis GV70 Electrified, Kia EV9 or Volvo EX30.

Experts will have to evaluate the listed models on several parameters, including manufacturability, design, safety, handling and comfort.

Last year, the best passenger car was the Acura Integra, the best crossover was the electric Kia EV6, and the best pickup was the battery-powered Ford F-150 Lightning. The Integra received praise for its looks and the fact that a manual transmission is an option on this model. In terms of points scored, it beat out the Genesis Electrified G80 and Nissan Z.

The Kia EV6, which competed against the Genesis GV60 and Cadillac Lyriq, was praised for its handling and impressive range. About the Ford F-150 Lightning, the jury said it was “an excellent example of how the most familiar car to Americans can be made even better by converting it to electricity.”
