Russia discussed cooperation in the automotive industry with Iran

From Russia, representatives of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “NAMI”, subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, were present at the meeting in Tehran. The topic of the meeting was bilateral cooperation in the production of cars and spare parts, and also discussed the possible creation of a NAMI branch in Iran to conduct certification tests of Iranian cars. The latter would “considerably save time and financial resources in preparation for the introduction of Iranian vehicles to the Russian market,” writes Tasnim.

At the meeting were representatives of two large Iranian companies, Iran Khodro Industrial Group (IKCO) and SAIPA Automotive Group, which both had previously expressed a desire to enter the Russian automobile market. In this regard, the issue of certification and the creation of a NAMI branch in Iran was raised – this organization tests all new cars in Russia.

Iran Khodro and SAIPA announced their desire to sell cars in Russia back in 2022, but as of October 2023, official deliveries have not begun – Iranian cars are transported through parallel imports. However, both companies took part in the MIMS Automobility Moscow automobile exhibition, held in Moscow at the end of the summer. Iran Khodro exhibited the Tara sedan, which is built on Peugeot 301 units, and announced that it would bring a batch of approximately six thousand cars to Russia by March 2024.

SAIPA intends to localize the assembly of the Shahin and P90 models in Russia. The first is a B-class sedan, which is based on a platform technically similar to the Toyota B trolley, and the second is a deeply modernized first-generation Renault Logan. The Iranians are planning to occupy one of the former Renault-Nissan production sites.
