Russian authorities began to purchase much more traffic cameras

Last year, the number of orders for systems for automatically recording traffic violations in the country increased by 2.5 times compared to 2022. Translating into the number of purchases, their number increased from 97 to 239. In total, the authorities spent one and a half billion rubles last year on concluding contracts for traffic cameras. Every month, Russian drivers receive fines of approximately five million rubles.

Over the past year, traffic cameras in the Moscow region issued 4,111 fines totaling 171 million rubles. Thus, drivers in the Moscow region brought about 14.5 million rubles to the budget monthly. Today, Russia is one of the top three in terms of the number of functioning traffic cameras, ahead of China and the United States. Over the past year, the number of complexes increased by 12 percent. This year, experts expect a similar increase.

Cameras in Moscow began to impose fines for a new violation. In Moscow, car thefts have become much less common thanks to traffic cameras. In Russia, they are in a hurry to introduce compulsory motor liability insurance control using traffic cameras.

Over the past five years, the number of traffic cameras has increased by approximately 13 thousand. Moreover, most of the complexes were placed within the framework of the federal project “System-wide measures for the development of road facilities.” This year the authorities are going to install a little more than 900 cameras. Thus, the total number of photo and video recording equipment in the country will exceed 23 thousand.

In mid-April, it became known that about 70 percent of traffic cameras in Russia could be turned off. This is due to the fact that most complexes do not meet the new standards.
