Car thieves have changed their interests: now they prefer domestic cars to South Korean ones. In addition, the number of thefts of Chinese cars has increased for the first time, TASS reports, citing Sergey Efremov, vice president of the All-Russian Union of Insurers (VSS).

According to the VSS, the long-time leaders in car thefts, Hyundai and Kia, are no longer in first place.

Domestic cars were the most stolen: 139 cars were stolen in six months, while last year’s total was 147.

The “demand” for Chinese cars is also growing, although it is still significantly lower: 10 units were stolen from January to June 2024, and nine in 2023. At the same time, interest in any specific models is not yet visible, insurers note.

As for the “Koreans”, in 2022, when they left the market, 248 Hyundai cars and 142 Kia cars were stolen. In 2023, the figures dropped to about 80 units for both brands, and in 2024 – to 22 for Hyundai and 30 for Kia.

Experts explain the trends not only by the decrease in the number of Korean cars, which are no longer officially transported, but also by the vulnerability of Chinese and Russian ones.
