Sales of new cars in the world revealed

Statistics are published by Autostat with reference to data from the consulting company GlobalData. In the first five months of 2024, the global new car market totaled 34.8 million units, up 3.4 percent from the same period in 2023. And in May, 7.225 million cars were sold, which represents an increase of one percent compared to the same month last year.

The world leader in new car sales is China. In this country, almost 1.95 million cars were sold in the last month of spring, while the market is declining: -2.3 percent compared to May of the previous year. In second place is the United States, where 1.439 million cars were sold in May – 6.4 percent more than a year earlier.

Over the same month, 1.12 million (-2.2 percent) were purchased in Western Europe, and 387.2 thousand units were purchased in Eastern Europe, which corresponds to an increase of 15.4 percent. Autostat analysts note that this result was made possible thanks to the ongoing recovery in demand in Russia, as well as high sales in Turkey, which increased by 10 percent in May, to 100 thousand cars.

Another 309.4 thousand cars were sold in Japan (-4.5 percent) and 215.9 thousand in South America, where the market grew by 5.8 percent compared to last year. 161.3 thousand cars were bought by Canadians (-1.5 percent) and 138.8 thousand cars were sold in South Korea (1.5 percent).

As for the mentioned Russian market, in May, according to Avtostat, we sold 127.17 thousand new cars, and this is 76.2 percent more than in the same month of 2023. The leadership with a huge advantage is retained by the domestic Lada brand, which at the end of spring accounted for 31.5 percent of sales, which in quantitative terms amounts to 40,065 cars sold.
