The answer is as simple as the Ertiga’s single-line multimedia display: officially, this model is not supplied to Russia. But cars imported in the “gray” order are offered at a price of about 2.5 million rubles. For a spacious “Japanese” with an atmospheric engine, automatic transmission and high ground clearance. But without beautiful materials, touch screens and on 15-inch wheels. And with a rather unique design. The offer is unique: there is simply nothing like this on the market for this money. You can try to look for a Largus Cross for less than 2 million, and for more than three million – perhaps the recently tested Geely Okavango.

In addition to the significant price difference with its closest competitors, the Ertiga is set apart in its own league by the fact that the Lada is only available with a manual transmission, while the Geely is exclusively available with a robot and turbo engine. Here, the combination of a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated K15B (like the Jimny) and an ancient 4-speed automatic with a vintage “overdrive” function sounds like something on a reliable car! But at the same time, it’s somehow very sad: why only 100 and some “horses” for a whole six-seater van with an automatic?

Ertiga is assembled in India, Indonesia and Myanmar and is aimed at markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America and South Africa. That is why anti-corrosion is the first priority in Russia

But these are just numbers taken out of context. And the latter is that, firstly, Suzuki knows how to make very light cars. And secondly, this brand knows a lot about driving tuning and maintains the bar even for the most primitive models. It is not for nothing that the low-power Swift Sport hatchback has long been the number one car for training novice racers at the Nurburgring, as well as the basis for European circuit and rallycross monocups.

With a curb weight of 1,200 kilograms, the Ertiga weighs at least 250 kg less than the Haval Jolion or Chery Tiggo 7 Pro. Therefore, the compact van is not that bad in terms of power output. And thanks to the high-quality tuning of the power plant, it is not only not slow, but also allows you to drive with pleasure. The responsiveness to the accelerator here is a cut above that of the “Chinese” with their delicate variators and thoughtful (for the same reason) robots.

The torquey motor is noisy but economical. It is good in the city and sufficient on the highway. But the automatic transmission sometimes feels fussy due to the lack of gears. However, the restyled Ertiga already has 6 gears

The Ertiga is even more surprising when you try to take a corner faster for fun. A simple chassis with MacPherson and a beam, plump 15-inch tires, a high center of gravity – well, what can we even talk about? But the light and well-tuned Ertiga turns so quickly, solidly and precisely that over time you start driving it more actively than any modern crossover from China. Without any reason – just because you like it, it’s fun!

The suspension forgives everything that a cast disk with a 65-profile tire can withstand. And on tram tracks, patches and joints, the foot does not even try to lift off the gas pedal.

In contrast to the awkward appearance, this driver’s “fuss” raises the mood even more. After all, even in statics, the Ertiga is all about disproportions: the size of the front doors relative to the rear, the length of the wheelbase and overhangs, the toy-looking wheels and the “floating roof” caricaturedly incorporated into the design. In dynamics, this appearance becomes frankly comical, but if you drive actively, the driver looks like a real troll: such an image does not fit with the capabilities! You just need to remember that there is not even a stabilization system here.

You won’t find heated seats in the Ertig, but the fabric interior doesn’t really need them. There’s no touchscreen — instead, there are touch buttons (okay, there is a “rich” version with a monitor). There’s no branded music either. But the four unnamed speakers suddenly play no worse than the Sony in the premium Exeed LX! The only driver assistants are the rear parking sensors. This will be appreciated by those who are tired of struggling with the beeping systems in the same Omods. The only decoration in the completely “wooden” interior is the aquaprint under the tree on the front panel.

But there is so much space that you can even drive in a turban! Or — in the Russian version — in a beaver fur hat. There is plenty of space in all dimensions and at any point in the cabin — lengthwise, widthwise, even upwards. The driver’s seating is also beyond reproach. Despite the body length of only 4.4 meters, the third row will give odds to other 7-seater crossovers of almost 5 meters in length. The ease of transformation of the cabin and the convenience of access to all seats are the result of Suzuki’s vast experience in the genre of ultra-compact kei cars.

The two-section floor is a simple but very convenient solution for access to the underground space when the trunk is partially loaded.

The interior is primitive, but functional. The analog instrument panel is easier to read than any drawn one. Climate control (which works adequately, by the way) is entirely on buttons and washers, and the transmission selector is clearer and more effective than any digital joystick. It just takes some getting used to, to avoid accidentally pressing the “overdrive” button and getting into mode 2 instead of D. Shelves, cup holders, charging ports – everything is in its place and in the right quantity, including the third row.

You have to grow up to similar models like Suzuki Ertiga. Try everything else that the market offers in this budget – and understand what is closer to you: numerous options, hype technologies and fashionable design or fundamental quality of driving sensations, a functional interior and reliability of units (prehistoric). Of course, I would like everything at once, but then there can be no talk of any 2.5 million rubles: Mercedes-Benz GLB on the same parallel import will cost almost three times more. /m
