The results of May on the European automobile market were unexpected: models with internal combustion engines took revenge, and the best of the electric cars lost 49% of customers. Tesla Model Y remains the best seller in the segment, but if at the end of May 2023 the crossover was the absolute leader, now the budget electric car is only in 18th place! The American auto giant responded by lowering prices.

In 2023, the Tesla Model Y topped the European sales rankings, and it looked like electric vehicles would continue to overtake their fuel-powered counterparts. However, the exact opposite happened: Volkswagen T-Roc, Golf and Dacia Sandero returned to the top positions! Sales of electric vehicles have fallen by almost half, and the title of global bestseller by the end of 2024 may go to Toyota.

Demand for electric cars has fallen due to the abolition of state subsidies and problems with Tesla deliveries amid the strike in Sweden. The Dacia Sandero was the best-selling car in Europe in the first five months. In May, sales of the updated Volkswagen Golf unexpectedly soared (+28%), almost reaching the “relative” T-Roc in first place.

Automotive News Europe journalists believe that the VW Golf may yet become the absolute European bestseller in May, because the difference with the T-Roc is only a few hundred cars, and the results for all markets have not yet been confirmed. At the end of the year, German bestsellers may get ahead of Sandero, because the demand for the Romanian “state budget” is declining.
