The new BMW M5 is the first to become a 717-horsepower hybrid

BMW has finally unveiled the new generation M5, which creates another revolution in its name – it is the first Plug-In hybrid in the history of the model.

A large front bumper, flared wheel arches, a trunk lid spoiler and a sports exhaust system are all present: the new BMW M5 Sedan looks exactly as fans see it in their sweet dreams. Thank you, BMW has explained in detail that we are not just dealing with “design for design’s sake.”

For example, the front bumper is distinguished by enlarged air channels – after all, good cooling is critical for a complex and heavy-duty engine. The wheel arches hide the really big wheels: 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear. And the exhaust pipes are integrated into the diffuser, which should improve the aerodynamics of the car.

The only unexpected design element of the BMW M5 is the hatch on the front fender that hides the charging port. After all, the new BMW M5 sedan is now equipped with a PHEV hybrid powertrain. There have been rumors about the appearance of a hybrid under the hood of the BMW M5 before – and now it has been confirmed.

The basis of the hybrid is the well-known petrol 4.4-liter V8, which has received new turbines and an exhaust manifold, and the fuel injection system operates with a pressure of up to 350 bar. This turbo engine produces 577 hp on its own. power. It comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission with an integrated electric motor. The latter produces an additional 145 kW or 194 hp. power.

The overall result of the hybrid is an impressive 717 hp. and 1000 Nm of torque – the new BMW M5 Sedan is not only the first PHEV hybrid in the history of the model, but also the most powerful variant in the history of the model.

Thanks to the 18.6 kWh battery (installed in the lower part of the body), the new BMW M5 can cover a distance of up to 69 km purely on electric power, while reaching a maximum speed of up to 140 km/h. For charging the battery, an integrated charger with a capacity of 7.4 kW is provided, which promises us a full charge time of 3 hours 15 minutes.

Although these are not at all the numbers that interest fans of the BMW M5, don’t you agree?! Okay, then write down: acceleration 0-100 km/h – in 3.5 seconds; acceleration 0-200 km/h – in 10.9 seconds, top speed – 250 km/h or even 305 km/h when ordering an option package. And also all-wheel drive with an active rear differential and an additional 2WD mode, adaptive M suspension, swiveling rear wheels (maximum steering angle of 1.5 degrees), up to five driving modes with the possibility of individual settings.

Finally, it is worth noting the very powerful brakes: already standard – six-piston calipers at the front (single-piston at the rear) and discs with a diameter of 410 mm; as an option – perforated carbon-ceramic discs with a diameter of 420 mm. Everything corresponds to the amazing power of the car and its considerable weight at 2445 kg.

The interior of the new BMW M5 sedan is identical to the BMW 5-Series cars in expensive versions: two displays (12.3- and 14.9-inch), a translucent Interaction Bar panel with the ability to change the color of the backlight, a center console with a bunch of switches. However, a lot of M sporty features come through here: zero-point steering wheel, sports seats, door sill trims, etc.

It is worth paying special attention to the M-switch of driving modes and the M1/M2 buttons on the steering wheel – they allow you to quickly access the hottest settings of the BMW M5 and get the most out of the car.

By the way, the new BMW M5 acts as not only a sports version of the BMW 5-Series, but also the most expensive: its cost exceeds $100,000 and confidently moves on. Therefore, customers can demand not only a sporty character, but also elements from the world of automotive luxury. For example, the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, panoramic glass roof and Merino leather are already included in the list of standard equipment of the car.

The BMW M5 will make its live debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month. After this, the company will begin production of the first batch of BMW M5, but those interested will have to wait a little longer – the start of sales and delivery of cars to customers is planned only for November this year.
