The machines were shown as part of the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia exhibition, where they were inspected by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. At the first stage, the range of the resurrected Volga will include three models: the Volga C40 D-class sedan, the Volga K30 C-class crossover and the Volga K40 D-class crossover. All of them, apparently, are converted cars of the Chinese brand Changan. Production will begin by the end of the year.

All three cars are equipped with a gasoline engine producing 188 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. It is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Such a combination of a 1.5-liter engine and automatic transmission is equipped, for example, with the Changan Raeton Plus, which was previously pointed out as a possible “donor” of the modern Volga. It was probably taken as the basis for the C40 sedan. Judging by the pictures, the crossovers of the K30 and K40 were Oshan X5 Plus and Uni-Z of the same Changan.

However, there is no official word yet about the partner who is helping with the revival of the Soviet brand. Be that as it may, the cars received an original design for the radiator grille with vertical slats and the GAZ emblem in the center.

The equipment included “smart” driver assistants, and the multimedia system was supplemented with Russian services. Mishustin, however, was dissatisfied with the “Russification” of new products, noticing the Chinese steering wheel.

“I would like the steering wheel to be Russian. It’s not as difficult as localizing the box and all the other elements,” the Prime Minister said.

The production of Volga cars will begin in 2024 at the GAZ Group plant in Nizhny Novgorod, where Volkswagen was previously produced. Starting from 2025, full cycle assembly will be launched. According to Autopotok, they plan to sell cars in former Skoda car dealerships.

For the first time in a long time, people started talking about resurrecting the Soviet brand in 2022. At the same time, the car plant filed applications to register the trademarks “Chaika” and “Volga-21”.
