Toyota has abandoned the Supra sports car with a basic turbo engine

The Toyota Supra, revived in 2018, entered the market with two BMW powertrains – the standard for the GR-branded coupe was the inline 6-cylinder 3.0-liter B58 turbocharged gasoline engine, and in Japan, some Asian countries and Europe, a version with an inline 4-cylinder 2.0-liter B48 turbocharged gasoline engine was also available. Later, a car with a less powerful engine was offered for North America, but this modification was retired in 2024.

The representative office of the Japanese brand in the United States reported that in the 2025 model year the two-door will be available exclusively with a 390-horsepower unit, which can be chosen with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. There will no longer be a version with a 260-horsepower engine in North America.

The company explained the decision to abandon the basic 2.0 engine by the fact that after the appearance of the “mechanics” for the top 3.0 unit, the demand for a car with a smaller engine fell, since it is only combined with an “automatic”. Considering that the GR Supra is, in principle, a fairly niche model with little demand in the US, the Japanese automaker decided to reduce costs and leave only the 3.0 and 3.0 Premium versions on the market.
