Until February 1, 2024, the operation of six production lines at four sites will be stopped, writes NHK TV channel. The reason is the identified falsification of data on the power of diesel engines, which are installed on popular Toyota and Lexus. This has already led to a halt in deliveries of a dozen models of Japanese brands, including the Toyota Land Cruiser 300.

Toyota intends to “work quickly and in an appropriate manner” to obtain permission to resume operations as quickly as possible, NHK reports.

An inspection has already begun at Toyota Industries Corporation, a manufacturer of diesel engines. It is conducted by the Ministry of Public Lands, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan.

It will be a wide-ranging investigation with on-site inspections, following which authorities will take action, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi. He added that the situation is serious and could undermine confidence in the Japanese auto industry, and therefore detailed explanations are expected from Toyota.

On Monday, it was reported that Toyota Industries Corporation falsified power data during engine certification tests. Three motors produced by the contractor are installed on 10 models. These include Toyota Fortuner, Hilux, Land Cruiser 300, as well as Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus 500d. The machines are supplied both to the domestic market and throughout the world. Shipment is currently suspended.

Last year, a scandal erupted around Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota, which was accused of falsifying crash test data. In total, more than 170 violations were found, which led to the suspension of deliveries of all Daihatsu, as well as the cars it produces under the Toyota, Mazda and Subaru brands.
