Jolion can only be called a dream car if the dream is the car itself. This crossover turned out to be too average in everything. Even its main competitor – the Geely Coolray – may well be a desirable car, because it has charisma in appearance and a bright character on the move. Even though it’s also a budget crossover. But Haval is not so simple – instead of emotions or super-thought out, it offers balanced equipment and excellent prices. And these factors outweigh, as a result of which Jolion has become the best-selling foreign car in Russia. But there are more and more competitors on the market, so without sensible restyling, the position of leader may not be retained.

Buyers were offered more than just new bumpers and wheels. Although this is also available, and alloy wheels are now generally produced locally. But they also give what crossover owners really needed, according to surveys. For example, adjusting the steering wheel for reach, which solved most of the problems with seating – the only inconvenience that remained was the seat cushion, which was a bit short for tall drivers. Secondly, the body has become more practical: all the chrome has been removed, with the exception of the side window moldings. After all, the shiny coating on the bumpers and doors deteriorated literally in one winter.

There is also an aesthetic benefit from this solution. Most often, chrome only makes small budget cars cheaper, so after restyling, the body with a new dark plastic finish began to look a little more solid. At the same time, the side moldings were also removed and arch extensions were installed at the same time. This not only added brutality, which Jolyon so lacked, but even slightly transformed the proportions – the silhouette from “pregnant” became toned.

Plastic fenders increased the width of the body by 33 mm. A practical thing, especially considering Jolyon’s mediocre visibility. I even tested these pads in action right in the hotel parking lot, where, as if to test this innovation, a plastic parking bollard was hidden under the high window line

In addition, the horizontal bars of the radiator grille have been replaced by vertical bars, and the spoiler on the tailgate has become more developed. Of course, in terms of the shockingness of the latter, Jolyon still cannot keep up with the new Coolray. But this is probably only for the better – you need to know when to stop. While the competitor finally fell into kitsch with all these chameleon colors and fake gills on the hood, Jolion finally came to a harmonious and at the same time memorable appearance. The lighting equipment, for example, was deliberately left untouched in order to maintain recognition.


At first glance, there is nothing significantly new in the cabin. Atmospheric lighting appeared, but in such a design that it would be better not to have it at all. Combined with a simple pattern, the Haval inscription in front of the front passenger gives off a lot of decorations with “Ali”. Here’s some great news: the buttons under the multimedia system display have undergone a reverse evolution – the somehow working touch panel has given way to a convenient mechanical “piano”. No more hassles managing features.

True, the set of these functions is still puzzling: among them there is the inclusion of climate control and air conditioning, but there is no banal temperature control – for this (and many others) you will have to turn to the display. Other inconveniences of the interior have also remained: the lack of “multi-touch” in the carplay, the tidy screen is whitish, grainy and half-blind in the sun, the transmission selector is not very clear and even the sun visor is inconvenient to use.

As for the units – no changes. But since the presentation took place near Murmansk, this time I paid attention to the operation of the all-wheel drive. In the context of controllability. Most likely, many owners of all-wheel drive Jolyons do not even suspect how well their transmission is configured in comparison with other budget all-wheel drive vehicles. We’ll skip the stuffy details – I’ll just say that the level of fine control on slippery surfaces is suddenly high and there’s even a bit of drive present.

But the target audience is much more important how far and how easily this all-wheel drive will allow you to travel, rather than how quickly and with what pleasure. And with this, Jolyon is doing well too: on off-road terrain the transmission works adequately, the ground clearance of 190 mm is not a record, but sufficient for dachas and picnics. And thanks to the new plastic body kit, the body is protected from mechanical damage better than before.

The only thing that gets in the way when off-road is the most successful setting of the accelerator sensitivity. The desire to correct this by changing the driving mode (in vain) will again lead the driver into the depths of the multimedia – there is no switch in the cabin. And on the asphalt, the very weak feedback in the steering is frustrating – surprising, because the Ora 03 electric hatchback, built on the same platform with the cool name LEMON, rides on the steering wheel and chassis just great.


The dynamics of the Jolion versions with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are equally modest – the stated acceleration to hundreds is almost 10 seconds. The Haval crossover feels especially leisurely compared to the groovy Geely Coolray, which has a full third more torque. But if you don’t get attached to the numbers and don’t go too fast, then Jolyon has enough traction both in the city and on the highway. I just want a softer and more efficient start from a place, because the robot is still rude.

The same can be said about the suspension, which also has not undergone any changes. The city is resilient, but tough – there is no desire to attack tram tracks or patches. But when you really need to exert yourself – for example, on a long dirt road – this chassis is just right. Impulses from potholes are absorbed effectively in the chassis, the body does not sway, so you don’t have to crawl on a really bad road. Not a Duster, but quite worthy – what is needed for a people’s car.


After such an update, Jolion has every chance to remain the most popular model. The range of options has become wider and is now not inferior to competitors: a panoramic roof, interior lighting, and seat ventilation have appeared. Heated front seats are already included in the base, even on the simplest manual version. And the very presence of such a three-pedal version for only 2 million rubles is another competitive advantage of Jolyon. As well as the all-wheel drive option, available from 2.5 million rubles. This is one of the most affordable 4x4s on the market.


While the Geely Coolray became more show-off and fashionable, finally focusing on a youth audience, the Haval Jolion, on the contrary, matured, became more practical and harmonious. Despite all the improvements, it is still far from ideal, but it is well balanced and satisfies the needs of the general public. It’s stupid to argue with the market: it has already put everything in its place. You can criticize the car as much as you want from the position of a perfectionist, but sales figures indicate that now this is exactly what most buyers need. /m
