Volkswagen and SAIC will release five new cars

On the fortieth anniversary of the joint venture, SAIC Group and Volkswagen Group announced a line of five new energy vehicles (NEVs) that they will create together. Moreover, SAIC will now play a more significant role in the partnership. Three hybrids and two “pure” electric cars will enter the Chinese market from 2026 to 2030. Whether they will appear outside of it is still unknown.

Previously, the SAIC-Volkswagen JV relied entirely on technology provided by the German side. The Chinese were mainly responsible for production and sales in the local market. However, now SAIC will take on more: in particular, electric cars will be based on its platform.

Over the past decades, SAIC has significantly increased its investment in research and development: investments exceeded $20 billion, and the number of patents reached 26 thousand. In 2026, our own solid-state batteries will go into mass production, and in 2027 they will begin to be installed on models of the IM Motors division.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, is losing customers in China. Last year its share fell to 14 percent, this year to 12 percent. In 2018, the German concern occupied almost a fifth of the Chinese market.

At the same time, Volkswagen entered into a new partnership on the other side of the world – in the United States. It pledged to invest five billion dollars in the electric car manufacturer Rivian, which, in turn, announced five new products at once. Three of them will be in the mass segment: they will probably be created jointly with the Germans.
