At the very beginning of 2024, Volkswagen presented a restyled version of its best-selling Golf. The hatchback and station wagon, the current generation of which will be the last with internal combustion engines, have become “smarter” due to new equipment and acquired more powerful engines. But the flagship Golf R will be delayed until the middle of the year – the top version of the hatchback will be officially presented in the summer, but for now the German automaker has shown only a camouflaged “hot hatch”.
The debut of the most powerful hatchback took place at the traditional winter Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria – legendary racer Hans-Joachim Stuck and six-time world rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson tested the new Golf GTI, Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE on the ice track. The athletes also got behind the wheel of the new Golf R, which is currently presented as a production prototype.
The all-wheel drive hatchback was presented to the general public in a camouflage livery and in the blue color characteristic of the R version. In addition to the updates that the base Golf and Golf GTI received, the new product will acquire a developed aerodynamic body kit, new wheels and blue accents. The technical characteristics of the new hot hatch have not been disclosed, but the car should clearly become more powerful.

The 2.0-liter gasoline engine in the Golf GTI has become more powerful by 20 horsepower and now develops 265 horsepower, so the Golf R, which before the update had a power of 315 “horses” and was equipped with a 7-speed DSG robotic gearbox, should also become more powerful. The official premiere of the new Volkswagen Golf R, as stated by the head of the Volkswagen R division, Reinhold Iwenz, will take place in the summer of 2024.
