In the automotive world, there is a tendency to mix styles and blur the boundaries between traditional car classes. A striking example of this is the cars of the Chinese brand Great Wall Motors – the Haval Dargo 2024 crossover and the Tank 300 2024 frame SUV. One model demonstrates a modern take on urban mobility, the other pays tribute to the classic canons of Off-Road. But both of them are addressed to those who value practicality, reliability and original design. The expert analyzed the advantages and features of the Haval Dargo and Tank 300, and compared the two SUVs.

Haval Dargo

Dargo is designed in a way that is relevant for modern crossovers, combining muscular shapes with sharp faceted body lines. The aggressive grille design, massive front bumper and large wheel arches hint at the model’s off-road potential. At the same time, the Tank 300 is distinguished by the classic appearance of a frame “jeep” – laconic rectangular body shapes, rough bumpers with large approach/departure angles and round headlights in the spirit of retro styling.

Cost and equipment

The recommended retail price of Haval Dargo in the basic Comfort configuration is within 3 million rubles. The top version of Tech Plus with a full set of equipment and systems will cost approximately 3.5 million rubles. The entry-level equipment includes:

2 displays diagonal 10.25 inches; combined interior trim; heated front seats and steering wheel; rear view camera; full electrical package; climate control.

At maximum speed, options such as a panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a keyless entry system, adaptive cruise, etc. are added.

The frame Tank 300 is slightly more expensive than the Dargo SUV. The basic Adventure package is offered for 4 million rubles, and the top version City Premium will cost 4.7 million rubles. Already in the “base” the crossover is richly equipped – there are:

heated all seats, steering wheel and windshield; two-zone climate; media system with 12.3-inch screen; virtual dashboard; many driver assistance systems.

The premium modification additionally receives Nappa leather interior, ventilated front seats, and forced locking of the center differential.

Comparison of technical characteristics

Under the hood of the Hawal Dargo 2024 there is a 2.0-liter GW 4N20 turbo engine with variable valve timing system and Atkinson cycle. Its output is 192 hp. at 5600-6300 rpm and 320 Nm of torque in the range of 1500-4000 rpm. This engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and delivers 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.

The 300 2024 tank, in turn, is equipped with a 2.0-liter E20CB turbo engine with slightly more power – 220 hp. and a torque of 380 Nm. This unit is paired with an 8-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission, providing smooth gear changes. Due to its greater mass, the Tank 300 is slightly slower than the Dargo during acceleration – 10.6 seconds to hundreds versus 9 seconds, and the maximum speed is limited to 170 km/h.

Chassis architecture becomes an important factor. Dargo uses a traditional crossover monocoque body structure, while the Tank 300 has a ladder-type frame, like a real SUV. This partly explains the significant difference in curb weight – 2230 kg versus approximately 1600-1700 kg for the Dargo crossover. Both vehicles are equipped with all-wheel drive with electronic imitation of differential locks, but the Tank 300 has the ability to rigidly connect the front axle, which is more reliable for overcoming heavy off-road conditions.

Behavior on the road

Thanks to its compact dimensions and energy-intensive suspension, the Haval Dargo 2024 feels very confident on city roads and highways. The increased track provides stability at high speeds and frequent lane changes. At the same time, a short wheelbase significantly affects the smoothness of the ride at high speeds and driving on uneven surfaces. At the limit of traction in the city and when maneuvering, the Dargo still handles better than the frame Tank 300 2024 with its high center of gravity. It is worth noting that the ground clearance of 200 mm allows you to confidently overcome light off-road conditions.

In turn, the Tank 300 is a typical representative of the class of frame SUVs. In urban environments, its dimensions and sluggish drive can cause some inconvenience when maneuvering and parking. But on the highway, the Tank 300 demonstrates excellent directional stability and excellent ride comfort thanks to the long-stroke spring suspension and weight distribution along the axles.

In off-road conditions, the Tank 300 has significant advantages due to its frame design, Part-time all-wheel drive system, differential locks and solid geometric clearance. Impressive approach/departure angles of 37/31 degrees combined with a short front overhang allow you to confidently overcome obstacles. Optionally, the Tank 300 can be equipped with all-terrain tires for driving on severe off-road conditions.

Dargo, with its transverse layout and front-wheel drive, was initially designed primarily for use in the city and driving on light dirt roads. It is worth noting its energy-intensive suspension and a rich set of settings for the all-wheel drive system, adapted to Russian operating conditions.

The costs of servicing any car are inevitable and directly depend on the regularity of maintenance, driving style and timely replacement of consumables. For the Haval Dargo, the scope of routine maintenance is standard – replacement of the main consumables is required every 10 thousand km. The first major maintenance will cost the owner approximately 18-22 thousand rubles, subsequent ones – 8-12 thousand.

Over the first few years of operation, the total bill for scheduled maintenance will be about 60-70 thousand rubles. To this should be added the costs of repair work in the event of failure of individual components. The service life of standard brake pads is about 30-40 thousand km for the front axle and 50-60 thousand km for the rear. The recommended frequency for replacing air filters is once a year. The first set of high-quality tires for Dargo will cost at least 30 thousand rubles.

Owners of the Tank 300 2024 also expect similar costs. Scheduled maintenance of this model is also required to be carried out every 10 thousand km, the cost of operations will fluctuate between 15-20 thousand rubles. The main difference is that the Tank’s frame structure is subject to high vibration loads and wear of the chassis. Therefore, it is advisable to shorten service intervals for an SUV.

The average service life of Tank 300 brake pads does not exceed 25-30 thousand km of intensive use. To replace a set of friction linings with all the work you will have to spend from 10 to 15 thousand rubles. Stabilizer bushings, shock absorbers and wheel bearings will also require frequent replacement. In the first years of operation, the cost of maintaining a Tank 300 can be about 100-120 thousand rubles, taking into account periodic replacement of oils and filters.

Weak spots

For the Haval Dargo 2024 crossover, one of the most common faults is loss of tightness of the engine cooling system. Excessive boost pressure causes premature head gasket failure. The result is coolant leaks and oil smudges. On runs over 80 thousand km, partial engine repairs are often required to restore the tightness of the cylinder head.

Another problem area for Dargo is the electrical. In particular, numerous cases of failure of the electric power steering have been recorded, causing a significant increase in the torsion of the steering wheel when maneuvering at low speeds. Owners also complain about periodic malfunctions of the multimedia system and virtual instrument panel after a sudden temperature change.

As for the Tank 300, the transmission is traditionally the most vulnerable point of the SUV. With active slipping driving, already at mileage of 100 thousand km, the transfer case may need to be repaired with the replacement of shafts and bearings. There have also been cases of missing teeth in the main pair of the rear gearbox. Owners of the Tank 300 can also expect unpleasant surprises in the suspension. After 50-60 thousand kilometers, intensive wear of the rubber-metal silent blocks in the arms of the independent front suspension was noted. Their destruction leads to knocking and deterioration of controllability. The way out of the situation is to replace the entire lever assembly, which costs a tidy sum.

Problems with interior sealing plague both models. Due to the poor quality of the seals, after a couple of years of operation, moisture and dust begin to penetrate into the interior, which is especially uncomfortable in winter. Partial elimination of cracks requires repair with replacement of door rubber bands. Thus, when choosing a car, it is worth considering the potential costs of diagnosing and eliminating these faults. Regular maintenance and a careful driving style will allow you to delay costly repair work as much as possible.
