The Bavarians showed a completely new M5 sedan, which for the first time in its history received an electric motor in addition to the internal combustion engine. “Emka”, now technically close to the flagship XM, has become more powerful, but at the same time noticeably heavier – so much so that it has a negative impact on the dynamics. Deliveries will start towards the end of the year, the price for the North American market is from $119,500 (10.5 million rubles).

In the new generation, the BMW M5 retains the 4.4-liter V8 with twin turbocharging, which is now paired with an electric motor built into the eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. The total power of the installation is 727 horsepower, and the peak torque is 1000 Nm.

The sedan will be able to drive with the internal combustion engine turned off: the electric motor produces 197 horsepower separately. The battery with a capacity of 18.6 kilowatt-hours provides 69 kilometers of travel in zero-emission mode, and an “acoustic accompaniment” can be played in the background, imitating the sound of the internal combustion engine.

The speed that the sedan can develop without electric propulsion does not exceed 140 kilometers per hour. The maximum speed has not changed since the previous generation and remains at 250 kilometers per hour (305 with the paid M Driver’s Package).

But the acceleration time to 100 kilometers per hour increased from 3.4 to 3.5 seconds. The reason is the curb weight, which has increased by almost a quarter: from 1971 kilograms for the F90 to 2445 for the new G90. The previous generation M5 Competition, by comparison, reached 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and the M5 CS in 2.9.

The drive of the M5 is the same full M xDrive with the ability to completely disable the supply of traction to the front axle when the stabilization system is deactivated. The sedan is also equipped with an active rear M differential.

The extended BMW 5-Series has become “global”: now with right-hand drive The head of BMW M confirmed the development of a wild four-engine model BMW X3: ultra-deep modernization

To reduce weight slightly, the suspension has been reworked, adding aluminum components to reduce unsprung weight. The arms in the rear suspension were also replaced. Helping the heavy sedan stop are brake discs the size of the wheels of some budget cars – 16 inches at the front and 15.7 inches at the rear. For an additional fee, you can install M Carbon carbon-ceramic brakes. Wheel sizes are 20 and 21 inches.

The new M5 received a special body kit with a large bumper and additional ventilation holes. At the same time, the “nostrils” are closed and resemble a plug, like in electric cars. At the rear there is a spoiler and pre-war black tailpipes.

In the cabin, there are no carbon seats, like other Emoks: instead, M Multifuction semi-sports seats are installed. The media system with a 14.9-inch display runs on BMW OS 8.5. There’s a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, a head-up display and a panoramic Sky Lounge roof, and a carbon fiber top is optional.

The BMW M5 G90 will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. The sedan will be produced at a plant in Dingolfing, Germany.
