The problem of interaction between police officers and black drivers in the United States is quite acute, since history knows many high-profile cases when their interactions, for various reasons, ended in tragedy. Human rights activists created the Driving While Black (DWB) project to draw attention to this situation. They note that stereotypes often lead to the death of people, because of which law enforcement officers expect some kind of trick from stopped black drivers and have a negative attitude in advance.

Together, Critical Mass, Goodby Silverstein & Partners and the Courageous Conversation Global Foundation created a vehicle designed to “shine a light on the double standard in policing against black people.” The car received transparent doors that “eliminate suspicion,” a steering wheel with a 10-2 sector so that hands are always visible, and a built-in fingerprint scanner that “ensures contactless exchange of information” between the police officer and the driver.

The DWB is missing the glove box to avoid gun charges and causing a shooting, and so the cops don’t have to search the trunk, it’s missing too. To avoid stopping under the pretext of speeding, the concept’s engine was removed and the air was released from the tires.

DWB is based on the Oldsmobile in which Philando Castile was shot and killed in 2016 when he was stopped for having a broken light, after which the driver immediately warned the police officer that he had a gun. Despite the fact that there was nothing illegal in the very fact of owning a weapon, St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez opened fire with his service weapon after these words.

The incident was caught on the cop’s dash cam and on the camera of the driver’s girlfriend, who managed to take out her smartphone and start recording, but the cop was acquitted of manslaughter and two counts of intentionally using a firearm to endanger public safety. The Courageous Conversation Global Foundation emphasizes that 7 of the concept’s 11 features are inspired by real-life tragedies.
