From January to May 2024, domestic auto plants produced 267 thousand passenger cars, Rosstat calculated. This is 66.6 percent more than in the same period last year. However, May was not so successful: production fell by 2.1 percent compared to May 2023 and by 31.5 percent – that is, almost a third – compared to April 2024.
Truck production also decreased in the last month of spring: 22 percent less was collected in May than in April. At the same time, by May 2023 the volume increased slightly – by 0.7 percent. In total, over the past five months, 73.5 thousand trucks were produced in Russia, increasing the volume by 21 percent.
Buses weighing more than five tons were assembled in May by 17 percent less than in April and by 7.5 percent more than in May last year. The figure for January-May is 6.3 thousand units (plus 26 percent).

The production of buses weighing less than five tons decreased by 15.4 percent compared to April and increased by 10.9 percent year-on-year. Since the beginning of the year, 8.2 thousand of these machines have been assembled (plus 16.2 percent).
Car sales also fell. In May, Russians bought 127.2 thousand new cars – seven percent less than in April, although almost 80 more than in May 2023. Lada is still the leader in the market, and the gap from the “Chinese” is still large.
