Australian CarSales, citing a representative of Suzuki Australia, reports that the Japanese brand is preparing to expand the capabilities of the Jimny model. Sales of SUVs have gone up with the appearance of a five-door modification, so Suzuki is going to bring several more options to the market – priority is given to a hybrid and a pickup. The company believes that the new versions of the Jimny can become popular in Australia, South Africa and Europe.

As for the pickup truck, Suzuki already has developments. In 2019, the Sierra Pickup Style concept car was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show – a pickup truck with a small loading area and a double cab. The show car differed from the serial SUV by the presence of towing eyes on the bumper, wooden panels on the sides of the body in retro style and LED lights on the roof.

And in New Zealand, a local distributor began converting SUVs into pickups in-house. This modification was a fourth-generation Jimny with a cut-off rear part of the body and a platform welded from aluminum profiles.

The hybrid Jimny, in turn, will be developed with an eye to those markets where strict environmental standards apply (for example, in Europe). With the introduction of the hybrid setup, Suzuki will once again be able to sell this model as a full-fledged model, instead of delivering it as a commercial van without a rear seat.

Suzuki does not rule out the appearance of an all-electric Jimny. But if this happens, it will only be after 2030. According to the Japanese company’s electrification strategy, by the end of the decade it will have five new “green” models in its arsenal and 80 percent of Suzuki sales in Europe will be electric.
