Volkswagen presented the ID.Code concept electric crossover at the Beijing Auto Show. The main feature of the new product is a system called “3D eye”, which watches you as you approach the car.

We are talking about a comprehensive interactive lighting system, which Volkswagen sees as part of an autonomous future. The light strip on the front of the car is called Light Cloud and consists of 967 LEDs, which, among other things, can have U-shaped “eyes” and “look” in different directions.

This light strip works in conjunction with a light screen that takes the place of the radiator grille. The Light Screen can display messages to other road users or simply static images.

Volkswagen says all these technical features are part of the secret sauce. The company’s designers present it as something intangible that surprises and inspires.

The suite of cameras and sensors gives ID.Code a fourth level of autonomy, so these so-called “eyes” and external screens can enable better communication between vehicles and infrastructure, the company says.

Unfortunately, the company is keeping details about the transmission, range and other technical details of the car secret. There’s also no mention of possible production plans, although Volkswagen is adamant about the seriousness of ID.Code’s plans, ostensibly pointing to the company’s future in China.
