The BMW XM crossover became the first independent project of the BMW M department in more than 40 years, the release of which was timed to coincide with the company’s anniversary. Considering that the new product debuted immediately in the flagship Label Red version with a 745-horsepower power plant based on a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline turbo engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 196-horsepower electric motor, it found application in racing. Moreover, in motorcycles and immediately in the top class MotoGP.

In 2024, BMW M-family vehicles will serve as official safety cars for the MotoGP World Championship for the 26th year in a row. Next season, the competition will feature perhaps the most unusual safety car in more than a quarter of a century of cooperation between BMW M and MotoGP, as the BMW XM crossover will play this role.

“This is a logical step for the most powerful BMW M car we have ever produced to become the new leader of our safety car fleet in MotoGP. The first MotoGP safety car with an electrified powertrain is a clear indication of our commitment to new, future-oriented technologies,” said Frank van Meel, CEO of the Bavarian brand’s M division, at the unveiling of the new product at the 2023 MotoGP season finale in Valencia.

Traditionally for MotoGP safety cars, the model will technically be completely standard. Modifications will only include the installation of flashing lights and a control system for them, Recaro racing seats in the cabin with multi-point belts, a roll cage and fire extinguishing systems. At the presentation, the car was shown in the signature color for the production BMW XM, but in the races the crossover will be used in a livery in the colors of the BMW M tricolor.
