According to the head of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, quoted by Belta, special attention is now being paid to the localization of cars. In particular, the president instructed to establish the production of engines and gearboxes in the country, mentioning the existing engine plant – MMZ (Minsk Motor Plant), which, among other things, produces diesel engines.

“Yes, it is not an easy task to produce your own engine for a passenger car and gearbox,” the agency quotes Lukashenko as saying. “But we set ourselves a task. We have a motor plant – let it produce, let it move. We make boxes and engines for other cars. Yes, this is a more delicate job, but we will do it.”

The President of the Republic of Belarus also mentioned Belgee – Chinese Geely cars are produced under this brand in Belarus under license. For now, this is only the X50 crossover (aka Coolray), but later the line will be replenished with a sedan (Emgrand) and another SUV (Atlas Pro). According to plans, by the end of 2023, the BelGee plant, where the Belgee X50, pre-restyling Geely Coolray and Atlas Pro models are assembled, will produce more than 60 thousand cars, which is twice as much as last year. And in a few years, production volumes will reach 120 thousand cars per year.

Another priority area for the Belarusian automobile industry is the creation of its own electric vehicle. According to Lukashenko, today the country has everything except the battery for such a model.
