This is an electric prototype of the XP-1, on which the British will test new technologies and promising solutions. The electric drive of the tricycle was designed in-house. The car turned out to be more powerful and only 60 kilograms heavier than the gasoline Super 3. The electric car supports bi-directional power transmission and, again for the first time in Morgan history, is equipped with an electric parking brake.

Morgan Motor Company did not abandon the idea of releasing something electric and, in confirmation of this, presented the experimental XP-1 tricycle. De facto, this is a prototype of the brand’s future electric cars. The XP-1 will test production technologies and will also help engineers better understand how to transfer the driving characteristics of cars with internal combustion engines to electric vehicles.

In general, the XP-1 concept is similar to the Morgan EV3. The British brand presented its first electric car at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 2016. The launch of mass production of the tricycle was repeatedly postponed, but the project was finally buried by an unsuccessful partnership with electrical components supplier Frazer-Nash Energy Systems. The British, taught by bitter experience, took a different path this time – and developed a power plant, as they say, in-house.

This is the first experience of this kind for Morgan. Moreover, in addition to the power plant itself, a set of tools was created for it. With its help, you can check the compatibility of various components, calculate the power reserve and simulate any of the possible travel scenarios. The XP-1’s aerodynamics are improved by 33 percent compared to the original Super 3. The electric car features bi-directional power transmission and, again for the first time in Morgan history, is equipped with an electric parking brake.

The prototype is driven by one electric motor installed in the transmission tunnel. Its output is 136 horsepower, while the 1.5-liter three-cylinder naturally aspirated Ford Dragon on the Super 3 develops only 118 horsepower. The battery with a capacity of 33 kilowatt-hours allows you to travel about 240 kilometers on one charge. The XP-1 also has several special features. For example, new aerodynamic wheel covers and an external battery status indicator.

Nothing is said about the serial prospects of the model. Morgan’s immediate plans include tests and only tests, so if a commercial electric car happens, it will not be until 2027. The XP-1 itself will always be visible. The company plans to use it in various events as a reminder of the inevitable electrification.
