In Italy, at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este festival, an experimental two-door called Skytop debuted. While we are talking about a concept car, the technology and interior are borrowed from the BMW M8 Competition, so a production version cannot be ruled out. The designers of the Bavarian brand were inspired by the BMW Z8 roadster of the early 2000s and the rare BMW 503 convertible of the second half of the 1950s.

Marcello Gandini: the humble rebel

Contrary to modern trends, the BMW Skytop is not an electric car, and the exterior has a minimum of shocking features, there are not even controversial nostrils! Another uncharacteristic feature is the large exhaust pipes, exposed to the public. Strictly speaking, the concept car is a targa with a removable soft roof section. No electric drives: the roof is installed manually, and there is a special storage niche behind the seats.

There is not a single common body part with the original BMW M8: only the rear-view mirrors remind of the donor. The side stampings have changed, the door handles are a thing of the past, the hood is now sloping and with slots: probably the idea is to allow air to pass through the radiator grille and generate downforce. The lighting equipment has become even more compact, and the image is complemented by discs with a directional pattern.

BMW will release 40 new models in five years

The concept car is made in a special gradient color, that is, the shade of the body changes depending on the lighting and viewing angle. The audience at the Italian exhibition received the BMW Skytop favorably, so a low-volume assembly cannot be ruled out. Marketers of the Bavarian brand are probably closely monitoring the development of the Mythos line from Mercedes-Benz, because the PureSpeed speedster is created according to a similar recipe.
