Ghana has received a license to sell AvtoVAZ cars, Lawrence Auku-Boateng, chairman of the Ghanaian-Russian Business Development Council, told RIA Novosti. Now the parties are agreeing on the localization of Lada production. Protocols are already being signed with representatives of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant: if everything goes according to plan, the assembly of Russian SUVs will be launched in the capital of Ghana in the first quarter of next year.

AvtoVAZ previously denied the Ghanaian company U2 Company Limited permission to distribute Lada cars locally. Now the parties have agreed, Auku-Boateng said. In addition, the possibility of local production is being discussed with AvtoVAZ.

As for UAZ, negotiations with it have progressed further: the first cars could roll off the assembly line in Accra, the capital of Ghana, as early as early 2024. The premises and equipment are already being prepared for production, and the partners are signing the relevant agreements.

In the summer, Ghana sent a delegation to UAZ to get acquainted with the production processes. The car plant itself also reported that it was interested in the local market, and pledged to deliver a batch of 300 Pick-ups to Africa by the end of the year. At the same time, the parties agreed to produce some components for Russian cars in different regions of Ghana.

As for AvtoVAZ, it too was going to resume assembly in Africa. The speech, however, was not about Ghana, but about Egypt, where Ladas were produced until 2022. According to the head of AvtoVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, Africans traditionally like Niva SUVs – both Legend and Travel, and “in a pickup truck format.” Egypt has not yet commented on possible cooperation.
