The Iconic SP concept debuted at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. Visually, the sports car develops the idea of last year [Vision Study](https://motor.ru/news/mazda-vision-study-22-11-2022.htm), and is similar in size to the MX-5 Miata. At the same time, the power plant included a rotary engine, which Mazda has not been equipped with since 2012, when the RX-8 retired. However, on the Iconic SP such a motor is not connected to the wheels: it acts as an electricity generator.

Apparently, the Mazda Iconic SP received a motor patented in the summer. This is a two-section engine that recharges a battery of unknown capacity, which, in turn, powers an electric motor with a return of 365 horsepower. The internal combustion engine can be refueled with different types of fuel, including hydrogen and synthetic. The battery can be recharged from external sources.

Mazda did not reveal either the dynamic characteristics or the power reserve of the compact two-door. But the dimensions and weight are known: the length is 4.18 meters, the width is 1.85, and the height is 1.15 meters with a wheelbase of 2.59 meters. The Iconic SP weighs 1,450 kilograms—about 350 more than the MX-5 Miata, thanks to its electric setup.

Exterior features include a low hood, hidden headlights, 8-shaped taillights, red-illuminated Mazda lettering and nearly frameless doors. The body is painted in a new shade of Viola Red. They tried to make the interior laconic, limiting themselves to smooth, single-color surfaces and a small central screen tucked under the front panel. Gears are switched with unusual “keys”, and the seats are upholstered in some environmentally friendly material.

Perhaps the Iconic SP will be a harbinger of the next-generation MX-5, and its rotary-electric setup will be the very new hybrid system that Mazda announced as part of its electrification strategy.
