Ahead of the Japan Mobility Show opening in Tokyo on October 26, Mazda has shared details of the vehicles that will be on display at its booth. The Japanese will focus on the MX-5 and its various versions, from a scale model to a car for people with disabilities. A mysterious show car has also been announced, which “symbolizes the theme of the exhibition” – it has been shown in the only teaser so far.

The released image shows the concept from the rear, featuring 8-shaped lights, a red-lit Mazda lettering, and another light element on the bumper, the same as last year’s Vision Study show car, a harbinger of the future MX-5. The Vision Study debuted exactly one year ago in the form of a virtual prototype demonstrating the vision for the future development of the Mazda brand. In other words, the currently unnamed concept, which will be shown at the Japan Mobility Show, may hint at the upcoming new generation MX-5.

Little is known about the latter. It is expected that the next MX-5 will retain not only the form factor, but even the internal combustion engine. It is logical to assume that in order to meet environmental standards, the sports car will have to be electrified, so that the internal combustion engine will become part of a hybrid installation. According to one version, the MX-5 will be turned into a moderate hybrid with a 2.0 e-Skyactiv X engine, which develops 190 horsepower.

Mazda’s electrification strategy will take place in three stages. The first involves the widespread use of existing technological assets to reduce harmful environmental impacts. The second phase will see the launch of a new hybrid system and a range of global electric models. In the final phase, Mazda will increase investment in battery technology and increase the number of green cars.
