Safety testing of the 2023 Toyota Crown was conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The model received the maximum rating of Top Safety Pick+: it scored points in all categories, including small overlap frontal impact and side impact. The only weak point of the car, according to safety experts from the IIHS, are the headlights – they rated their performance as “acceptable.”

The tests included the 16th-generation Crown, which debuted last summer in four variants: a classic sedan, an all-terrain sedan, a raised hatchback and a crossover. The IIHS chose for crash testing a raised sedan with all-wheel drive, in the basic configuration and with a set of proprietary safety systems Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The latter’s work was rated as good not only in the diary, but also in night conditions.

As for the optics, only the Bi-LED headlights in the entry-level configuration caused criticism. In more expensive versions, the car is equipped with Quad-LED headlights, and there were no complaints about their performance.

The sedan is available in the US with a choice of two hybrid units: the first based on the naturally aspirated 2.5, and the second with a 2.4-liter turbo engine. In the first case, the power reaches 186 forces, and in the second – 272 forces. The installations also include nickel-hybrid batteries and the E-Four all-wheel drive system. Prices for the Crown sedan start at $41,145 (almost four million rubles at today’s exchange rates).

In addition to the Crown, other Toyota models previously received top safety ratings: Camry, Highlander, Prius, Sienna and Tundra. Four more vehicles, the Corolla, Corolla Cross, RAV4 and Venza, received a Top Safety Pick rating without a plus.
