A presentation of the EM90, a single-volume vehicle that will play in the premium MPV segment, took place in China. At first, Volvo will offer the only rich package with rear-wheel drive, a 116-kilowatt-hour battery and a range of 738 kilometers. The price is amazing: 818 thousand yuan, that is, the Volvo EM90 was 64 percent more expensive than the more dynamic all-wheel drive Zeekr 009 (from 499 thousand yuan)!

The Volvo EM90 is a redesigned Zeekr 009: the minivans have the same body, identical side panels, and the difference in design is achieved through hinged elements and unique optics. Both models will be assembled at the same plant of the Geely holding company, so the fundamental difference is only in the power plant, but it is not in Volvo’s favor.

The EM90 has a single electric motor to drive the rear axle (272 horsepower, 343 Nm), while the Zeekr 009 has a dual-motor setup (544 horsepower, 686 Nm). In terms of dynamics, the new product of the Swedish brand is inferior to the original: acceleration from 0-100 takes 8.3 seconds versus 4.5 seconds.

Volvo has only a basic battery (116 kilowatt-hours), while the “nine” can be equipped with a 140-kilowatt-hour battery. The Volvo EM90 has a range of up to 738 kilometers, while the Zeekr single-volume can travel up to 822 kilometers (CLTC).

The EM90 package includes an active noise reduction system, a two-chamber air suspension, “silent” tires, a 15.6-inch cinema screen, as well as multi-contour second-row seats with massage, ventilation, heating, a separate climate zone, retractable tables and settings panels in the doors.

The minivan has a panoramic roof, a virtual dashboard, wireless charging for gadgets, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 21 speakers and a projection screen, but the options are not unique: the Zeekr 009 also offers all this.

The key market for the Volvo EM90 is Asia, but the Swedish brand will analyze the demand for premium minivans in Europe and the United States. Interestingly, there are definitely no plans to sell the Zeekr 009 in Europe, so there will be no competition within the Geely holding in export markets. However, in China, the new product will inevitably be compared with the Zeekr, which even in the top configuration costs 588 thousand yuan ($81 thousand): almost 30 percent cheaper than the Volvo EM90.
