It’s been three years since Maserati returned to the ranks of purebred supercar makers with the MC20. But during this time, the Italian brand did not release a more powerful modification for public roads, although track and racing versions appeared. But this did not stop independent journalists from taking the basic version of the Maserati MC20 coupe to the Nordschleife and getting lap times to compare the Italian two-door with its competitors.

Sport Auto test driver Christian Gebhardt completed the 20.6-kilometer lap in 07:25.26. In the race, the journalist used an absolutely standard Maserati MC20 with a 3.0-liter V6 turbo engine producing 630 horsepower under the hood.

The engine is combined with an 8-speed robotic gearbox and rear-wheel drive. The Sport Auto editor’s result wasn’t the most impressive for a purebred sports car, as the latest Maserati MC20, while on par with the 2008 Ferrari Enzo, was slower than the 2011 Nissan GT-R, which clocked 7:24.22 on a wet track.
