The positive statistics were reported by the Main Directorate for Road Safety of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. The department emphasized that compared to the same period last year, the number of fatal accidents decreased by 26 percent, and the number of victims decreased by 13 percent. In addition, the traffic police reported that officers continue to form a sharply negative attitude in society towards drunk driving.
According to the traffic police, since the beginning of 2023, 9,599 accidents have been registered in Russia that occurred due to the fault of drunk drivers. This list includes cases where motorists refused a medical examination. Compared to last year, the number of such incidents decreased by 14.2 percent. At the same time, the number of dead and wounded increased by 26 percent. According to the agency, a trend towards a reduction in accidents with drunk drivers has been observed in Russia over recent years.
The State Traffic Inspectorate emphasized that drunk driving is one of the main problems on roads around the world. Every year in Russia the punishment for this offense is being tightened, and medical examination methods are being improved. In addition, the department continues to formulate a negative attitude among citizens towards drunk drivers, and also warns that such accidents lead to dire consequences.
Today in Russia, for driving while intoxicated or refusing a medical examination, a fine of 30,000 rubles is imposed, as well as deprivation of rights for up to two years. If the violation is repeated, the motorist faces criminal liability.
