This is stated in a statement by the Governorate of the Papal State, which intends to implement the climate strategy with the help of the Volkswagen Group: the Vatican’s partnership agreement with the auto giant has already been signed. The city-state’s goal is in line with current European trends – to become completely carbon neutral and rely exclusively on renewable energy sources.

In its statement, the Vatican Governorate notes that the country is trying to pursue an environmental policy aimed “at preserving the environment and developing energy saving strategies.”

The next step will be the creation of electric charging stations throughout the state and at sites in Rome. And in seven years the Vatican will completely abandon the internal combustion engine. Volkswagen Group products have been selected as a replacement for dozens of cars from the existing fleet: these will be models of the ID family, from ID.3 to ID.5, with a total of about 40 units.

Pope Francis, a longtime greener, is also heading to the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in December. He believes that we need to fight the crisis more decisively, since “the world we live in is collapsing and may be approaching a turning point.”

The Ulyanovsk Pickup was chosen by director Paolo Sorrentino himself. He didn’t know that the car was Russian: he simply liked the UAZ more than other proposed options.
