The production of Lada for the African market will be organized in the country, Ethiopian Ambassador to Russia Cham Ugala Uriat told TASS. According to him, AvtoVAZ has already signed a contract with one of the local companies, and “in the near future” cars assembled at Ethiopian facilities can be seen in neighboring African countries. In addition to AvtoVAZ, other companies are also showing interest in local production, the ambassador added.

When exactly Lada production will begin in Ethiopia and where it will be located is still unknown. Cham Ugala Uriat, who assured that the government will facilitate AvtoVAZ’s investments, hopes for an early start in car assembly. They can be shipped, for example, to Sudan and South Sudan, Kenya and Somalia.

Two more companies are interested in building assembly lines in the country and are ready to come for negotiations, the ambassador said.

Two years ago, UAZ agreed on large-scale assembly of cars: “Loaves” and “Patriots” were to be produced at the Bazra Motors site in the city of Kombolcha, Amhara state. By 2023, it was planned to produce three thousand Russian cars in this East African country, but since then the progress of the project has not been reported.

The same Bazra Motors in 2021 also announced its readiness to cooperate with AvtoVAZ. She was ready to help organize the assembly of the entire line – from Granta to Niva Legend – and increase volumes to 10 thousand cars per year.
