Europe’s most prestigious classic car event, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como, hosted the premiere of the BMW Concept Skytop. Under this name, a luxury Targa debuted that pays homage to the classic BMW 503 and the BMW Z8, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. But from a technical point of view, it’s just a BMW M8 Competition in a new body. Like the original model, the prototype has a 625-horsepower 4.4 V8 with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

“The open two-seater resembles a carefully crafted sculpture, and its sporty elegance complements its muscular stance,” describe the new concept car. The Targa received “wings” instead of door handles, acquired exclusive wheels, the signature “shark nose” is complemented by a compact illuminated radiator grille, and the elegance of the silhouette is emphasized by the line running from the hood through the interior to the aluminum trim on the rear door.

BMW has focused on the optics – the LED units mounted on milled aluminum holders have been specially developed for the Concept Skytop using the latest technology – and are said to be the thinnest headlights to date. Laconic lanterns complement the look of the model. The leather-wrapped roll bar behind the seats is combined with side fins on the B-pillar and a fully retractable rear window.

Two removable roof sections, also trimmed in leather, can be stored in a special trunk compartment. The color scheme ensures a smooth transition from interior to exterior, regardless of whether the roof is open or closed. At the rear, the reddish-brown roof tone flows into a muted silver tone with the effect of a chrome body paint. Leather seats feature brogue accents. Reddish-brown surfaces are complemented by crystal applications, but the overall interior is similar to the M8 Competition.
