Volkswagen, Volvo and PSMA Rus factories will restart in test mode in December

The auto industry of the Kaluga region, which has been in a state of hibernation for a long time, is preparing to be revived. According to Deputy Governor Vladimir Popov, car assembly plants in the region plan to launch test production in December 2023, and full-fledged production in 2024.

Of the 30 companies in the auto cluster, 8 are currently inactive, but almost all intend to resume work. Which ones exactly are not specified. According to forecasts, by the end of 2024 the share of the automotive industry in the region’s economy could reach 7%. Previously, large automobile plants Volkswagen, Volvo, PSMA Rus and component manufacturers operated in the Kaluga region. But in 2022, many suspended their activities due to sanctions. Thus, in May, Volkswagen sold its assets to the Avilon holding for only 125 million euros. In August, the Volvo Trucks enterprises were bought by the Aston group, which plans to start producing trucks together with the Industrial Investments Group of Companies.

Despite the difficulties, the automotive industry of the Kaluga region is not giving up and is preparing to resume production. This industry continues to play an important role in the region’s economy and has potential.
