In 2022, Lucid Motors, in order not to be outdone by Tesla and its Model S Plaid, introduced the flagship version of its Air sedan – the Sapphire version became the first-born of the branded sub-brand of the same name, which will include the most powerful electric cars. The electric car received a three-motor 1200-horsepower power plant, which endowed it with outstanding dynamic characteristics. This has been proven in reality on the circuit race track and drag strip.

British racer Ben Collins, best known for his role as test driver Stig from the original Top Gear show, took the wheel of the new car. Air Sapphire ended up in the hands of an athlete at the Sonoma Raceway in California, where it was tested at two racetracks.

On the ring track, all-wheel drive and three electric motors, which produce a total of 1,200 horsepower, made it possible to demonstrate good pace for a road sedan, but the automaker does not provide an exact lap time. But the company did not hide the time at the classic drag racing distance of 402 meters.

The Lucid completed the straight quarter mile in 8.9 seconds, a remarkable performance for a standard model. Of the production cars today, only 12 (of which a quarter are variations of the Bugatti Chiron) can drive a quarter faster than 10 seconds. The only model that can run a quarter mile within nine seconds is the Rimac Nevera.
