The German company told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the windshield, rear and side windows on seven GLC 300s were not properly bonded. The problem was identified at the quality control stage: as a result of the investigation, it turned out that the whole issue was due to low-quality glue. The defect first became known in September, and owners of faulty Mercedes-Benzes will be notified on January 2.

Mercedes-Benz emphasized that incorrect gluing affects the passive safety of the new GLC: in the event of an accident, the airbags may not work correctly, as they will not be secured by the windows. The company admitted that incorrectly labeled glue got onto the assembly line, and therefore any glass on the crossovers from the list could fall out while driving.

Changes have been made to the supplier’s (EFTEC AG) production process to ensure that a similar error does not occur again. Probably, all seven Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 will have glass with the same markings. The recall campaign will launch in early January, and American dealers will carry out all work free of charge for owners. This is the first recall for the second generation GLC.

The last time Mercedes-Benz initiated free car repairs was a month ago: a wiring problem was identified on all eight-cylinder AMG SLs of the new generation. However, the fault was identified before the actual fires.
