The design of the novelty, which debuted at the IAA Mobility in Munich, is far from the production one, but allows you to see the chosen development vector. The cross-coupe got a streamlined body with a sloping roof, an evolved branded Vizor plug in front with a luminous “compass” that plays the role of a central element. The salon turned out to be minimalistic and at the same time technological – to match the exterior.

The appearance of the Opel Experimental was designed according to the philosophy of Bold and Pure (expressiveness and purity), which was first tried on by a show car with a similar name – the 2018 GT X Experimental. On the new Experimental, she moved to the next stage. Its feature was the Opel Compass, formed by horizontal DRLs and two vertical diode lines and with a new illuminated emblem in the center. There is also a “compass” at the back, but there the stripes converge to the inscription Opel or Vauxhall.

Under the cover of the Opel Vizor, various sensors and radars are placed, as well as lidar and cameras for driver assistants. Cameras replace rear-view mirrors here as well. For the sake of aerodynamics, the door handles were hidden in the body, flaps were added on both sides and a diffuser.

Experimental is built on STLA, the new architecture of the Stellantis corporation. The manufacturer refers it to the C-segment: that is, in terms of dimensions it should be close to the Astra, but the interior is spacious like that of a model of a class higher, Opel assures. There are no trendy big screens. Their role is played by a projection display that occupies the entire width of the windshield.

The multimedia system understands voice commands. An offline mode is provided in which the steering wheel folds so as not to interfere. Another “trick” is special comfort seats with electrochromic fabric upholstery: it has built-in LEDs that change color at the request of the driver. They can also give light warnings about obstacles in the “blind” zones.

Opel did not disclose technical data, but it is known that STLA allows the installation of single- and twin-engine power plants, as well as batteries that provide up to 700 kilometers of travel. Experimental in its current form will not go to the series, but may become a reference point for the electric successor Grandland, which will debut in 2024.
