During the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia exhibition, the revived Volga model range debuted.

Plans to restore the once popular model were announced last year. Three models were presented at the exhibition – a sedan and two crossovers, which were slightly modified models of the Chinese brand Changan. Car production at Nizhny Novgorod production facilities will begin this year.

The sedan was named C40, while crossovers were presented with the indexes K30 and K40. This difference in indices emphasizes that the models belong to different classes: Volga K30 is a class C crossover, Volga K40 is a class D crossover.

All three variants are equipped with a 188 hp petrol engine. and a torque of 300 Nm, paired with a seven-speed robotic gearbox. Additional technical parameters are not disclosed.

It is not officially stated which company is the technology partner of the project, but preliminary information suggests that the new Volgas are modified versions of Changan cars: the C40 sedan is the Changan Raeton, the K30 crossover is the Changan Oshan X5 Plus, and the K40 is the Changan Uni- Z. They differ from the original models by radiator grilles with branded vertical slats, reminiscent of the GAZ-21, and a branded logo.

Probably, the assembly of the revived Volga cars will be taken over by the GAZ Group enterprise in Nizhny Novgorod, which previously produced Volkswagen cars for the Russian market. It is planned that next year it will move to full-cycle production.

Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin visited the Volga pavilion and noted that the new cars look modern. At the same time, the prime minister drew attention to the need to localize production first of at least those machine parts that are not technologically complex.

“Where is your steering wheel made, Chinese? I wish the steering wheel was Russian. It’s not as difficult as localizing the box and all the other elements,” the head of government said.
