At the Bilweb auction they are selling an executive sedan in the back of the W116, which belonged to Carl XVI Gustav. There are 332 thousand kilometers on the limousine’s odometer, and there has not been a single restoration in half a century, so the condition is by no means museum-quality: there are external and internal damage. Experts believe that it is unlikely that it will be possible to get more than 150 thousand crowns (equivalent to 13.4 thousand dollars) for the S-Class.

Carl XVI Gustav ascended the throne at the age of 27, and the monarch’s fleet included “driver” models from the 1960s and 1970s. However, this particular car is modest: for the royal house they purchased a utilitarian Mercedes-Benz S 280 with a carburetor engine, a simple fabric interior and a minimum of options: there is not even air conditioning!

Time has not been kind to the executive sedan: the original fabric has been preserved, but the driver’s seat and headrest have holes, and the rubber mats have worn out. The condition of the body is worse: the car is devoid of moldings, the paint is swollen, the bottom is rusty, there are traces of repairs and deep corrosion. The original discs are also in poor condition.

Auctioneers say that the last check of the technical condition was carried out in December 2010, and then the sedan started easily, the automatic transmission worked flawlessly, and the engine did not malfunction. However, the odometer shows more than 330 thousand kilometers, and on such runs it is impossible to do without an inspection of the units.

The historic Mercedes-Benz W116 requires an expensive restoration, but the starting price is low: bidding is expected to start at 120 thousand crowns ($10.7 thousand). The car remained in the garage of the King of Sweden until June 1979, and subsequent owners are of no interest.
