While there is no shortage of SUVs in China, local brands continue to expand their lineups to capture an even larger share of the pie.

The latest example is the iCar V23, developed by Chery’s new electric vehicle sub-brand in collaboration with Xiaomi’s Zhimi Technology.

The all-electric SUV looks like a mixture of design elements taken from iconic SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40.

The iCar V23 will be the brand’s second production model, following the iCar 03 SUV launched earlier this year. Despite the fact that it looks massive, the new product is actually smaller than the first model: its length is 4220 mm, its width is 1915 mm, its height is 1845 mm, and its wheelbase is 2730 mm.

At the front, the round LED headlights, grille, air intake, and front and rear fenders are reminiscent of the Land Cruiser FJ40. On the other hand, the front bumper and flat windshield give off a Jeep Wrangler vibe.

The flat sides and side grilles appear to be inspired by the Land Rover Defender, although the flush door handles are a nice and rather unique touch.

At the rear, a number of design cues from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class can be recognized, such as the low-mounted rear lights. On the tailgate you can see an external storage case, similar to a spare tire cover.

The interior is typical of modern electric vehicles, with a large infotainment display on the front fascia, a Defender-style steering wheel, rectangular air vents and a combination of black and white leather upholstery.

The company hasn’t revealed detailed specifications other than confirming that it will be available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

According to Chinese media reports, the iCar V23 will be available with one or two electric motors, drawing power from CATL battery packs.

The range is reported to be more than 400 km for the all-wheel drive version and more than 500 km for the rear-wheel drive version.

The official presentation of the iCar V23 will take place on April 12, after which it will be shown at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. Sales in China will begin in the second half of the year. The main competitor will be the similarly sized Baojun Yep Plus from SAIC, Wulling and GM.

Xiaomi Zhimi Technology and Chery will continue their cooperation, with six to eight new vehicles planned to be launched in China over the next three years.
