South Korean portal Korea Joongang Daily claims that the project of the all-new G70 has been put on hold due to weak demand. Insiders insist: customers prefer larger cars and crossovers to sports sedan. Initially, the third-generation Genesis G70 was supposed to debut in 2025-2026 as an electric car, but now the future of the model is in doubt.

Genesis G70 debuted in 2017 and became the first independent model of the Korean premium brand. In 2020, the four-door went through a restyling, and this year the base engine has changed. The successor to the “seventies” was supposed to enter the market at the end of 2025, and Genesis planned to bet on a larger electric car.

According to insiders, the new Genesis G70 differed little from the G80, so it was decided to abandon the more compact model. Sales of the “seventies” leave much to be desired: in 2018-2019, the model sold 14-17 thousand units, in 2020 demand dropped to eight thousand units, and in the first half of 2023 only 2.1 thousand cars were sold. The G70 Shooting Brake station wagon also failed.

Hyundai Motor refused to confirm the retirement of the Genesis G70. However, the near future of the Korean premium brand is not connected with cars: the GV70 and GV80 electrified crossovers, the GV80 cross-coupe, and the GV90 full-size SUV are on the way.
